Concert Goes On
The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus (BGMC) had a concert scheduled (and contracted) at the Zorlu Performance Center on June 26, 2015. The government of Turkey facilitated the cancellation of the show. The concert went on — in front of an audience of 5,000.

Statement from Craig Coogan, Executive Director of The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus

The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus will perform at the South Campus of Bosphorus University in Istanbul at 6:30pm on Saturday, June 27, 2015. This outdoor event will be open to the public and is free of charge. Speakers will be set up to ensure that everyone who wishes to hear the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus will be able to do so. The performance and audience area will be subject to normal security provisions and be cordoned off. There has been intense public interest in our June 27 performance in Istanbul, and we hope to accommodate everyone who would like to hear us sing. 1,500 seats will be available.
We are deeply excited about performing in Istanbul, and we are overwhelmed, grateful and humbled at the outpouring of support we have received from Turkish supporters of equal rights, especially from the Istanbul LGBTI community. The mission of Bosphorus University is to educate its students at the highest level, and to expand and contribute to science, art, and culture in Turkish society. Bosphorus University has long welcomed LGBTI people and causes on its campus. We are especially glad to be performing at a school that was founded by Dr. Cyrus Hamlin, a New Englander!
Our performance on June 27 will present to the Turkish people a diverse repertoire from Broadway songs to pop music by artists such as Madonna. Music has the power to transcend boundaries and create connection among people from different backgrounds, languages and beliefs, and has long been a central part of social justice movements. Shared cultural experiences go deeper than words and intellectual exchange, and we cannot wait to share our music with the people of Turkey during LGBTI Pride Week!
Boston Eşcinsel Erkek Korosu müdürü Craig Coogan’ın açıklaması:
Boston Eşcinsel Erkek Korosu’nun İstanbul konseri, Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Güney Kampüs’te 27 Haziran 2015 Cumartesi günü saat 18:30’da gerçekleşecek. Bu açık hava etkinliği, dileyen herkesin katılımına açık ve ücretsiz olacak. Boston Eşcinsel Erkek Korosu’nu dinlemek isteyen herkesin konseri takip edebilmesi için bir ses sistemi kurulacak. Sahne ve seyirci alanı, olağan güvenlik önlemlerine tabi tutularak güvenlik kordonuyla çevrelenecek. 27 Haziran’da gerçekeleşecek İstanbul performansımıza çok büyük bir ilgi olduğundan şarkılarımızı dinlemek isteyen herkesi ağırlayabilmeyi umuyoruz. Bunun için 1,500 kişilik bir oturma alanı oluşturulacak.
İstanbul’da sahne alacağımız için oldukça heyecanlıyız. Türkiye’de herkes için eşit hakları savunanlardan, özellikle de İstanbul LGBTİ topluluğundan aldığımız destekten dolayı müteşekkir olduğumuzu, onur duyduğumuzu belirtmek isteriz. Boğaziçi Üniversitesi, öğrencilerine en iyi eğitimi sunmak ve Türkiye’deki bilim, sanat ve kültür hayatına katkıda bulunmak gibi bir misyon taşıyor. Boğaziçi Üniversitesi uzun bir süredir kampüste LGBTİ’leri ve LGBTİ mücadelesini destekliyor. Kendisi de bir New England’lı olan Dr. Cyrus Hamlin tarafından kurulan bir okulda sahne alacak olmaktan ötürü ayrıca mutluluk duyuyoruz.
27 Haziran’da Türkiyeli seyircilerimize Broadway şarkılarından Madonna gibi sanatçıların pop müziğine kadar geniş bir repertuar sunmayı dört gözle bekliyoruz. Müziğin sınırları aşma ve farklı geçmişlere, dillere ve inançlara sahip insanlar arasında bağlantı yaratma gibi bir gücü var. The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is deeply excited about performing in Istanbul this June. We are disappointed and saddened that our concert at the Zorlu Center Concert Hall will not happen. During a meeting May 13 between representatives from ACFEA Tour Consultants and Vocaliz, and the Zorlu Organization and Performance Center worked to confirm the details of our contract. Unfortunately, they were unable to do so and ACFEA Tour Consultants, with the full cooperation of the Zorlu Center, is focused on identifying an alternative venue for our June 27 performance.

Konserimizin Zorlu Performans Sanatları Merkezi’nde gerçekleşmeyecek olması bizleri hem üzdü, hem de hayal kırıklığına uğrattı. 13 Mayıs’ta ACFEA Tur Danışmanları ve Vokaliz’den temsilciler ile Zorlu Performans Sanatları Merkezi ile sözleşmemizin ayrıntılarını doğrulamaya çalıştık. Ne yazık ki, ayrıntıların doğrulanamaması üzerine ACFEA Tur Danışmanları ile -Zorlu PSM’nin de tüm desteğini alarak- 27 Haziran’daki gösterimiz için farklı bir yer arayışına girdik.

We are very excited about our upcoming performance in Istanbul at the magnificent Zorlu Center Concert Hall on June 27, as part of the Istanbul Gay Pride celebration. We know that there has been a published report that our concert has been cancelled. We have a signed contract with the Zorlu Performance Center for our June performance, and we have every expectation that the concert will go on as planned.
The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus creates musical experiences to inspire change, build community and celebrate difference. We are looking forward to presenting to the Turkish people a diverse repertoire of music – from Broadway songs to pop music by artists such as Madonna. We are also excited to learn more about Turkish culture and cuisine during our visit to Istanbul, and honored for the opportunity to perform before a Turkish audience. On Wednesday, May 13, our representatives from ACFEA Tour Consultants will be meeting with the Zorlu Organization and Performance Center to clear up any miscommunication.

Haziran’daki gösterimiz için Zorlu Performans Sanatları Merkezi’yle imzaladığımız bir sözleşme var ve konserin planlandığı gibi gerçekleşeceğine tüm kalbimizle inanıyoruz.
Boston Eşcinsel Erkek Korosu, değişime ilham vermek, topluluk oluşturmak ve farklıları kutlamak için müzik deneyimleri yaratıyor. Türkiyeli seyircilerimize Broadway şarkılarından Madonna gibi sanatçıların pop müziğine kadar geniş bir repertuar sunmayı dört gözle bekliyoruz.
